UEFA To Seek At Least 16 Spots In 48-Team World Cup

Feb 9, 2017 12:10 PM

UEFA will seek at least 16 places in the expanded 48-team World Cup.

Last month FIFA, world football's governing body, opted to add 16 teams to the 2026 tournament.

Two teams will advance to the knockout round from each three-nation group, and Ceferin, speaking after the UEFA executive committee meeting, said: "We think it's realistic to ask for 16 slots plus another condition that each European [team] is in a different group.

"I think all 16 can qualify for the second round."

Feb 8, 2017 1:22 PM

Qatar is spending almost $500 million every week on major infrastructure projects to host the World Cup in 2022.

Ali Shareef Al-Emadi said on Tuesday that the rate of spending could continue through 2021.

“We are spending close to $500m per week on capital projects,” he told journalists.

“And this will carry on for the next three to four years to achieve our goal and objective of really getting the country ready for 2022.”

More than $200 billion will be spent in total by the Emirate in preparation for 2022.
